Harvesting Learning Resources on Organic Agriculture and Agroecology to Semantic Repositories

To raise public awareness on the environmental and economic benefits of organic agriculture and agroecology (OA & AE), education is considered key. The EU funded project Organic.Edunet aims at providing a freely-available portal where learning contents on OA & AE can be published and accessed through specialized technologies. This paper describes a system for providing semantic capabilities (such as automatic reasoning) to an arbitrary set of agricultural learning resources, in the context of the Organic.Edunet initiative. This is achieved by harvesting learning resources’ metadata from a non-semantic repository (SCAM) and storing them in a semantic ontology-based repository (LOMR), with a specific purpose application called SCALOM.
